Web content audit

A content audit is a detailed assessment of everything that’s already on a website or planned for it. Content may include text, images, video, audio, downloads, data and forms.

A content audit of your site helps you to:

  • See the size and scope of what you have (you may be surprised by the results!)
  • Decide what you need to do with it
  • Break down the tasks into achievable and affordable chunks
  • Take control of your content so  your site stays clear and fresh
  • Brief your web team clearly.

The more years pass, the more old content hangs around on websites not doing anything. The authors have often moved on, and their successors can’t decide what to keep and what to throw out.

Sometimes it's easier just to add layer upon layer of new content.  But this is like slapping on new paint without a good rub down and a layer of undercoat.  It doesn't look good and it doesn’t last long. Your readers can’t find their way around, so they quickly lose interest.

‘I come across many websites where there is a well-designed top level with quality content. However, when you click down a few levels, everything changes – it’s like walking out of a plush hotel straight into a rubbish dump.’
Gerry McGovern, Killer Web Content
